"Bringing art to the community and the community to the arts"

                           Sharon Marroquín

Sharon Marroquín was born and raised in Mexico City.  As a dancer she has toured nationally and internationally with numerous companies in both Mexico and the United States including Theatre Frederik, Danza Estudio, Caverna 7, Tabula Rasa, the Marcus Schulkind Dance Company, Anna Myer & Friends, and the Peanut Butter & Jelly Dance Company.  Relocating to Austin in 2000, she has performed as guest artist with Wicked Cricket Dance Theatre and the Kathy Dunn-Hamrick Dance Company.

As a choreographer Sharon has created pieces for Ballet East, Tapestry Dance Company, and various local Latino/a showcases.  She is most proud of the evening-length production Huellas en el Agua, a collaboration with friend and colleague Toni Bravo. Sharon’s work has been shown at the New York City International Fringe Festival, the Central Square Arts Fair in Boston, and at the Festival de Libre Enganche in San Antonio. Sharon was awarded the 2003-04 Austin Critics Table Award for outstanding choreographer. She has been the recipient of grants from the Massachusetts Cultural Council and the Fondo Nacional Para la Cultura y las Artes.

Firmly believing that art can be a transcending force in people’s lives, she enjoys teaching and sharing her love of dance with students of all ages and levels of ability.  She has taught at many schools and venues including the Centro Universitario de la Danza in Mexico, Boston University, Cambridge Rindge & Latin High School, and the 7th Dance & the Child International Conference (Finland).  She is currently on the faculty at Tapestry Dance Company.
