Sharon Marroquín
was born and raised in Mexico City.
As a dancer she has toured nationally and internationally with
numerous companies in both Mexico and the United States including
Theatre Frederik, Danza Estudio, Caverna 7, Tabula Rasa, the Marcus
Schulkind Dance Company, Anna Myer & Friends, and the Peanut Butter
& Jelly Dance Company. Relocating
to Austin in 2000, she has performed as guest artist with Wicked Cricket
Dance Theatre and the Kathy Dunn-Hamrick Dance Company.
As a choreographer Sharon has created pieces for
Ballet East, Tapestry Dance Company, and various local Latino/a
showcases. She is most
proud of the evening-length production Huellas
en el Agua, a collaboration with friend and colleague Toni Bravo.
Sharon’s work has been shown at the New York City International Fringe
Festival, the Central Square Arts Fair in Boston, and at the Festival de
Libre Enganche in San Antonio. Sharon was awarded the 2003-04 Austin
Critics Table Award for outstanding choreographer. She has been the
recipient of grants from the Massachusetts Cultural Council and the
Fondo Nacional Para la Cultura y las Artes.
Firmly believing that art can be a transcending
force in people’s lives, she enjoys teaching and sharing her love of
dance with students of all ages and levels of ability.
She has taught at many schools and venues including the Centro
Universitario de la Danza in Mexico, Boston University, Cambridge Rindge
& Latin High School, and the 7th Dance & the Child
International Conference (Finland).
She is currently on the faculty at Tapestry Dance Company.
